I recently tested the DEWALT DWS779 and was genuinely impressed by its power, performance, and value for money. As such, it seemed only right that I put its bigger brother through its paces. The DEWALT DWS780 is priced a couple of hundred dollars higher but claims to offer the highest total cutting capacities in its class.
Nested crown molding, vertical baseboards, and standard cross-cutting capacities are better than any other 12-inch miter saw on the market right now. The words of the manufacturer, verified by an endless array of positive reviews and endorsements.
The DEWALT DWS780 Miter Saw isn’t what you’d call a low-price piece of kit, but it’s designed for professional use and comes with an industry-leading warranty. Along with the saw itself, the package ships complete with a 12″ cross-cut blade, a blade change wrench, a dust bag, and a hold-down clamp.
Through this DEWALT DWS780 review, you can understand that this model is an ultra-premium bundle that adds up to exceptional value for money. It’s also been designed with portability in mind, boasting a more compact and lightweight design than most comparable saws in its class.
Features of DEWALT DWS780
Paying around $500 for a pro-grade saw really isn’t a big deal, considering this thing will serve you proudly and consistently for years to come. According to the manufacturer, the official specifications of the saw are as follows:
- Item Weight – 56 pounds
- Product Dimensions – 21.5 x 17.7 x 17.1 inches
It’s also worth bearing in mind that the Dewalt Miter Saw DWS780 ships complete with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty – more than you’ll get from any competing brand on a similar saw. This thing has been built to perform and built to last – all of which justifies that upper-end price tag.
As far as the manufacturer is concerned, the primary features and selling-points of the miter saw are as follows:
Precise Cutting Without Recalibration
The manufacturing quality of this miter saw is unsurpassed, featuring an improved ultra-bright LED light to cast a laser-like shadow on the surface of the material. Precise cutting a simplified with every use, with no recalibration required – even after changing blades.
Ultimate Durability
Rugged and durable in the extreme, this compound DWS780 miter saw has been designed with heavy-duty site use in mind. Nevertheless, it’s surprisingly easy to transport and comparatively lightweight.
High-Capacity Cutting
The high-performance 15-amp motor under the hood is good for a maximum speed of 3,800 RPM. This enables the blade to tear through even the toughest materials like fresh air, saving time and effort with every cut. The Dewalt DWS780 12 inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw leads the market with cut capacities, which include 6-3/4-inch vertical capacity, 7-1/2-inch nested crown capacity, 13- 7/8-inch horizontal capacity, and exclusive back fence design that cuts up to a 2×16 at a 90-degree angle and 2×12 at a 45-degree angle.
Extensive Warranty
The manufacturer covers every sale with an unbeatable three-year warranty for total peace of mind. If anything goes wrong during this time, your machine will be repaired or replaced, 100% free of charge.
My Experience with DEWALT DWS780
DEWALT has a global reputation for unbeatable performance for a good reason. It really has been designed to do it all. Whether dealing with delicate materials and precise cuts or tearing through the toughest materials on a busy construction site, this thing simply isn’t going to let you down.
The power and precision of the DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw are simply awesome, made all the more surprising by how lightweight and easy this thing is to handle.
The inclusion of a new XPS cross-cut alignment system with LED light means that recalibration is eliminated from the equation. The cuts produced are so smooth they don’t need to be finished with sandpaper, and everything needed to get started right there in the box.
Funnily enough, my only slight complaint about this miter saw concerns its less-than-fantastic dust collection capabilities. It’s not a fundamentally messy tool to work with, but like the DWS779 it doesn’t collect nearly as much dust as I’d like.
Pros
- Astonishing power and performance
- Remarkable versatility and accuracy
- Exceptionally easy to use
- Very impressive cross-cutting ranges
- Surprisingly lightweight
- Extensive manufacturer’s warranty
- Superb value for money
Cons
- Disappointing dust collection
Final Thoughts
I defy anyone who knows power tools not to be impressed with the DEWALT DWS780. Pretty much everything about this thing (with the exception of dust collection) screams power, performance, and pure value for money.
Some would call $500 or so a high price to pay, but I’ve worked with $1,000+ saws that aren’t nearly as good as this. And certainly, none that come with the same three-year warranty or the pedigree of a renowned brand like DEWALT.
Trust me – this is an impressive piece of engineering.
